Welcome to the ‘Health informatics’ course (MSN 816). The overall aim of this course is to provide you with the opportunity to develop and enhance your knowledge and skills and application of  health informatics in health care practice and research.

The emerging field of health informatics is making a great contribution in supporting and facilitating healthcare. This module has been developed to meet two related purposes; to enable you develop competence in health informatics and as a foundation for advanced studies in the discipline of health informatics.

In this course we shall examine the concept of health informatics and explain its role in health care. We shall also identify the informatics tools used to enhance health care and the different types and uses of  health records. The use of mobile technologies and consumer informatics will be introduced as we look at the concept of information technology in healthcare. Finally we shall discuss the ethical principles of information sharing and the application of public health informatics.
